The Long Beach City College men’s basketball team beat Palomar 80-74 in the first round of the SoCal Regional Playoffs last week, but the Vikings had their season ended at No. 1 San Diego City College on Saturday with a 116-97 loss in the second round.
LBCC sophomore William English led the Vikings with 25 points and five rebounds in the win over Palomar. Freshman guard Jeremiah Sadler finished with 15 points and five assists. Against San Diego, Jamiu Akinbile scored a team-high 22 points with eight rebounds and a pair of assists.
The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) named English and Sadler first team South All-Conference, while freshman Jordan Heard made honorable mention. Sadler averaged 14.9 points, and English averaged 14.8 points.
Women’s Basketball
After a 67-55 loss to the No. 4 LA Trade Tech Beavers in the SoCal Regional Playoffs on Saturday, the CCCAA gave four Vikings South All-Conference recognition. Sophomore guards Doylebonet Walker and Brittnay McDaniel earned first team honors, while sophomore guards Julia Ochoa and Jada Haynes made second team.
Walker was third overall in the conference with 16.1 points per game. McDaniel was third in conference with 195 total rebounds. She was also first in the conference with 111 blocks overall, and second in conference with a 44.5 shooting percentage.
Men’s Volleyball
The No. 1 Vikings (10-0) picked up back-to-back sweeps last week against Antelope Valley and Moorpark. LBCC has only lost two sets this season.
Sophomore setter Marques Buggs had 10 kills, and freshman middle blocker Carlos Hernandez finished with eight block assists against Antelope Valley. Against Moorpark, sophomore Steven Rotter had 10 kills and four digs. Andrew Pearson filled the statistics box with nine kills, one service ace, five digs and four block assists.
LBCC hosts Santa Barbara City College at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Track & Field
Former LBCC track & field and cross country coach Ron Allice is returning to be a track & field program adviser and assistant coach.
“Coach Allice is an icon in the sport of track and field and a legend here in the Long Beach Community,” said LBCC Athletic Director Randy Totorp said in an official release.
Allice coached for 50 years with more than 30 Olympians on his resume. He stared coaching at LBCC in 1977 and won 11 state championships in 16 seasons. Allice is a Long Beach native who went to Franklin Middle School, Poly, Long Beach City College and Long Beach State.
Beach Volleyball
The split their games against Ventura and CSU Northridge last weekend, but are still ranked No.1 in California by the AVCA CCCAA Beach Volleyball Coaches Poll. LBCC freshmen Josannah Vazquez, Sierra Davis, Doris Woods, Elsa Woods, Isabella Alvarez, and sophomore Mariah Clausen all swept their opponents against Ventura College.
Swimming
Both men’s and women’s teams opened their season at the Mt. SAC Invitational over the weekend. For the men, sophomore Shaun Spaulding took fifth place overall in the 50-yard butterfly (25.22). For the women, sophomore Cori Reynolds took third place overall in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.50). The Vikings open conference action on Friday at Pasadena City College.
Baseball
The Vikings (8-6) fell to the Southwestern College Jaguars 2-11 on Saturday at the Joe Hicks Field. Freshman pitcher Benji Gonzalez (1-1) took his first loss of the season.
Softball
LBCC (10-8) swept a double header on Saturday by beating LA Mission, 7-0, and Grossmont, 7-2.
