In a busy day at Irvine Valley College, No. 5 Long Beach State defeated the hosts in an exhibition, and then won in two 5-0 sweeps against Nebraska and Concordia in a dominant day.
Long Beach State (11-1) won without dropping a set against Nebraska (4-13), despite playing in both matches without Anete Brinke, who was held out of the day’s action as a precautionary measure.
Her teammates came through without issue against the Huskers. Zoi Konstantopoulou and Nicci Reinking were in complete control at No. 4 in a 21-3, 21-13 victory over Hayley Densberger and Chesney McClellan, and Kristyna Adamcikova and Hailey Harward were the first done on the way with a 21-7, 21-9 win over Sami Slaughter and Jazz Sweet.
Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto sealed the win in the top flight with a 21-14, 21-9 victory against Kelly Hunter and Lauren Stivrins. Megan Kruidhof, put into action again with Sasha Karelov, came away with a win in her second match with Sasha Karelov 21-19, 21-15 at No. 2, and Hannah Matt returned to action with Marisa Ramsey in a 21-9, 21-7 win at No. 5.
Adamcikova and Harward rolled again at No. 3 in the second match of the day for the Beach, beating Kyra Auten and Marcela Frazzoni of Concordia (3-4) 21-9, 21-17, and Matt/Ramsey defeated Julia Denboer and Kekela Hendrickson 21-9, 21-5 to put the Beach ahead 2-0.
Barber/Nieto once again provided the clinching win at No. 1, 21-9, 21-11 over Vanessa Bernzen and Tristan Self. Konstantopoulou and Reinking had a tougher fight, but came away with a 21-12, 21-11 win at No. 4.
The closest match of the day came in the second flight against the Eagles, as after a 21-11 win in the first set, Karelov/Kruidhof dropped the second to Riley Gill and Avery Keathley. Gill/Keathley took an early lead in the final set, but a huge push helped pair of veterans pull away for a 21-11, 20-22, 15-7 win.
The Beach started the day in the morning against the hosts, and swept the Lasers 5-0 for the second time this season in an exhibition.
No. 5 Long Beach State returns home next week for two more tri-duals, starting on Tuesday when the Beach welcomes Stanford and Cal State Los Angeles to the LBSU Sand Courts for three matches beginning at 11 a.m. between the 49ers and the Cardinal.
