Long Beach City College Notebook: Beach Volleyball Wins A Pair

Long Beach City College women’s beach volleyball (13-1, 4-0) won their tenth and eleventh consecutive matches by defeating Mt. San Antonio College (5-0) and El Camino College (3-2) on Friday morning at Granada Beach.

The No. 1 Vikings were led by a pair of wins from freshmen Sierra Davis and Josannah Vasquez. The teams of freshmen Isabella Alvarez and Doris Woods didn’t drop a set while sophomore Mariah Clausen and freshman Elsa Woods also went undefeated.

LBCC returns to conference action on Friday, Mar. 30 against Rio Hondo and Mira Costa at Rio Hondo College.

Long Beach City College Sweeps At Granada Beach

Men’s Volleyball

The No. 1 Vikings (15-0, 2-0) beat Santa Monica at home last Friday 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22 in their second conference match. It’s only the fourth dropped set of the season for LBCC.

Steven Rotter led LBCC with 12 kills while six different Vikings recorded at least four kills. Victory Villarreal was in on eight blocks while LBCC held Santa Monica to a .127 team hitting percentage. Setters Marques Buggs had 18 assists, and Melbe Perez had 17.

LBCC is at El Camino (9-3) on Friday for a conference match.

Baseball

The Vikings (14-12, 6-5) swept Compton last week in a three-game conference series to go above .500 for the first time in almost a month. Sophomore Reese Berberet made school history with three home runs in the doubleheader on Saturday. The third baseman set the single season and career home run records with the homers, breaking Vive Byrd II’s mark. Berberet has 12 home runs this season, and 18 for his career.

LBCC outscored Compton 41-18 in the series while shortstop and leadoff hitter David Rivera racked up nine hits, six runs scored and five RBIs in the series. The Vikings are at Santa Ana on Thursday in nonconference action.

Softball

The upset win over Cypress sparked a three-game winning streak for LBCC (17-11, 1-3) at the Ventura Tournament last weekend. The Vikings beat Porterville, Glendale and Mt. San Jacinto by a combined score of 29-2. LBCC is at El Camino (17-6, 4-0) on Thursday for a conference game.
