Most of the local teams are taking spring break, but here is what’s going on around the city in the next few days.
FRIDAY
Long Beach State Dirtbags vs. UC Irvine, 6 p.m.
The Big West Conference schedule starts Friday at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field with a Black & Blue rivalry game. The Dirtbags are 59-61-1 all-time against UC Irvine, but swept the Anteaters last season and have won six of the last seven meetings. UCI opened conference play last weekend and lost a series at home to Hawaii. Senior first baseman Ryan Fitzpatrick is hitting .360 this season with a team-high 23 RBIs and nine doubles. The series continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
SATURDAY
Long Beach State Men’s Volleyball vs. UC San Diego, 7 p.m.
A day after playing UC San Diego on the road, the top-ranked 49ers are back in the Walter Pyramid for senior night festivities featuring Davis Cannon, Matt Butler, Bjarne Huus, Jason Willahan and Zach Gates. The 49ers are hitting .394 as a team while holding their opponents to a .174 clip.
Long Beach State Softball vs. UC Riverside, 1 p.m.
The 49ers are at the LBSU Softball Complex for the second consecutive weekend, and they’re looking to extend their 10-game winning streak. LBSU and UC Riverside will play a doubleheader Saturday, and finish the weekend series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Highlanders (25-12, 2-1) have the second most wins in the Big West, and senior Jenna Curtan leads the conference with a .436 batting average.
Long Beach State Women’s Water Polo at Hawaii, 6 p.m.
LBSU is finishing the regular season with two road games, and the first is toady against first-place No. 5 Hawaii. The 49ers can pull even with the Rainbow Warriors with a win. Hawaii’s Irene Gonzalez leads the Big West with 46 goals.
Long Beach State Women’s Tennis vs. San Diego State, 1 p.m.
After visiting San Diego on Friday, LBSU is back at Rhodes Tennis Center Saturday for a nonconference match against San Diego State. The 49ers have only beaten the Aztecs 12 times in 33 meetings.
TUESDAY
High School Softball, 3 p.m.
This is the first Moore League action after spring break, and the top four teams in the Moore League will be in action. Defending league champions Lakewood is at home to face Wilson, and the winner will take over first place. The Lancers have won 10 of the last 11 league championships, and the Bruins won the only other title in 2012. Millikan will also face Poly at Joe Rodgers.
WEDNESDAY
High School Baseball, 3:30 p.m.
Just like softball, the top four teams in the league will be at Blair Field today for a doubleheader. Millikan and Poly will play for first place in the first game before Wilson and Lakewood renew their rivalry. Millikan, Wilson and Lakewood shared the league title last year, and these games at Blair Field were the deciding factors.
