The Long Beach State women’s tennis team held off San Diego State in a hard-fought 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center thanks in part to Lena Pacholski’s three-set win to clinch the match.
“We fought hard for the match today,” Long Beach State head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. “I’m very proud of this team.”
LBSU (9-8) earned the non-conference win at home to improve to 6-4 when playing at Rhodes Tennis Center, while SDSU dropped to 0-5 on the road.
The Beach started off strong winning the doubles point as Pacholski and Sadaf Sadeghvaziri earned a 6-1 win over Jana Buth and Paola Diaz at the No. 2 spot. The duo of Carlota Casasampere and George Gulin sealed the doubles point as the pair won a 7-5 battle over Magda Aubets and Nnena Nadozie.
The Aztecs were quick to even the score as they picked up the first win in singles competition with Diaz taking the match on court two 6-3, 6-3 over Natalia Munoz. Long Beach State was unfazed as Sadeghvaziri came back and collected a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Abbie Mulbarger to give the Beach their lead back.
Once again, SDSU fought back and came away with the win at court No. 4 as Jenny Moinard defeated Lalita Devarakonda, 6-2, 7-5, to even the score at 2-2.
Long Beach State put the match away as the Beach won the next two singles competitions. Maren Helgo got things going as she won a tough battle at No. 3 defeating Aubets by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Pacholski finished it off with her three-set win at No. 1 as she handed Buth a loss by set scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-0.
Long Beach State will be back in Big West competition on Friday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at CSUN.
