HIGH SCHOOL
Josh Lambert, Wilson Volleyball
Wilson’s Josh Lambert had a special week last week. He led his Bruins to a big-time upset of Lakewood, handing the Lancers their first loss of the Moore League schedule; Lambert had 22 kills and 10 digs in the five-set win and also had a game-saving foot save in the second set. Lambert went on to put up 8 kills and 14 digs against Cerritos.
Yuritza Gutierrez, Jordan Softball
It was a special week on the diamond, as Poly’s Evelyn Sablan hit for the cycle and Poly’s John Dameron pitched a no-hitter to Jordan that was one late-game walk shy of a perfect game. Jordan pitcher Yuritza Gutierrez had a great week, pitching her second career no-hitter to Compton in a 16-0 win and then following it up with a one-hitter in a 14-1 win over Locke.
COLLEGE
Josh Tuaniga, Long Beach State Volleyball
Josh Tuaniga is a Long Beach native living the dream, playing the nation’s best volleyball in his hometown as he led his 49ers to a Big West title last weekend. Tuaniga earned Tournament MVP honors after leading the 49ers to a .414 attack against Irvine and a .369 clip against Hawaii. The 49ers hit .552 on balls set by Tuaniga over the weeknd.
Tatyana Tuilaii-Umi, LBCC Volleyball
The Vikings freshman and her partner Jordan Diaz were supposed to be LBCC’s “B team” this season but have risen above expectations. At last weekend’s conference championship, Tuilaii-Umi and Diaz swept the Vikings’ top-flight team to earn a berth in the final, where they also posted a sweep win. Four of the six teams advancing from conference to state were from LBCC.
