Long Beach Athletes Will Pack CIF-SS Track Finals

The CIF Southern Section track and field championships aren’t being held in Long Beach this weekend, but they’re going to have a distinctly LBC feel—that’s because six local schools placed 33 entries in the finals. The finals will be at El Camino College beginning at 11 a.m. with running events beginning at 1 p.m.

Long Beach Poly has an area-high 14 entrants including the state’s defending champion in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, LSU signee Ariyonna Augustine. She’s favored to defend both CIF titles this weekend, while the Poly 4×100 relay she anchors is also favored to bring home a title.

The Jackrabbits are still atop the point projections for the state meet but will likely not win another section championship this weekend due to an overwhelming show of force in the distance races by Great Oak, which has nine girls in the mile and two mile finals alone. Poly is the defending CIF-SS and State champion on the girls’ side.

Wilson has six entrants but is a virtual lock for a pair of CIF titles with its 4×400 relay, which still has the state’s top time this year, and sophomore high jumper Rachel Glenn, who has the top jump in California. Glenn also qualified as an individual in the 400as the sixth-seeded runner, and as the anchor for Wilson’s 4×400 relay, seeded fourth.

Millikan’s Riley Williams is seeded second in the long hurdles race and the Rams placed five entrants. Lakewood’s Alexus Anderson will run in the 200 and 400 and Jordan placed one athlete in the finals as well, with A’Lena Chaney in the long jump.

St. Anthony freshman Asjah Atkinson could be poised for a breakout meet with four events—the top seed in the 100 hurdles, the two-seed in the 300 hurdles and long jump, and anchoring the fifth-seeded 4×100 team.
