Garrett Hampson made history today by getting called up by the Colorado Rockies. He is the 50th Long Beach State Dirtbag to make a Major League Baseball roster. The Dirtbags now have 12 former players on MLB rosters, and have had more former players in the league than any other college or university since 2010.
The Rockies are playing at the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight, and Hampson will make his debut at second base. He will bat seventh against Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley.
Hampson hit .306 in 53 games with the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes, and had 18 doubles, six triples, eight home runs, 68 runs scored and 33 stolen bases in 91 games with the Rockies organization this year. He also had 11 3-hit games this season.
“We are so excited for Garrett and his family and friends,” Dirtbags head coach Troy Buckley said in an official release. “He epitomizes a Dirtbag and has so many people that respect and root for him because of how he’s always done things. This is special because of the man that Garrett is.”
Beach Volleyball
Junior Hailey Harward has won back-to-back California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) Tournaments this summer. Harward and partner Maddy Roh won the Santa Barbara Open Championship on July 1, and she won the Huntington Beach Women’s Open with partner Falyn Fonoimoana.
Men’s Golf
Senior Joe Fryer won the 119th Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship last week. He finished 9-under par and three strokes ahead of second place after starting the tournament with rounds of 67 and 66.
Men’s Volleyball
Associate head coach Nick MacRae will be a head coach at the USA Youth A1 High Performance Championships at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa, Okla., from July 24-28. Eight different teams will train for five days before a tournament against each other.
