Long Beach Poly is well-known for having produced more NFL players than any other high school, with over 60 former Jackrabbits having hit the league. Last week, though, an NFL player that didn’t come from Long Beach borrowed Poly’s practice field to get a workout in: Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.
“It was great for our players to be able to see how a professional at the top of his game works to perfect their craft,” said Poly coach Stephen Barbee.
Prescott was in town for ESPN’s annual awards show, the ESPYs, and wanted to get in some footwork and throwing in between media obligations. He and his team made the brief trip down the 110 and the 405 to Long Beach to use Poly’s field space. After he worked finished a brief workout of a few hours, Prescott spoke with the Poly players whose space he shared.
“He talked on a range of topics from continuing to work hard at every rep and the importance of making the right decisions,” said Barbee.
The new Poly coach said his team took notice that a big-name NFL QB was still finding ways to get work in while ostensibly on vacation for an award show.
“It was great to hear him talk and echo the same things we stand for like outworking everybody,” said Barbee.
It wasn’t just a treat for the Poly football program, either. Poly basketball coach Shelton Diggs was excited to have Prescott on campus–he’s a huge Cowboys fan.
