July has been a busy month on the recruiting front for Long Beach footballers, as Long Beach Poly’s Alex Austin and Millikan’s Malik Bradford both committed to Pac-12 universities.
Alex Austin
Austin, the son of Long Beach City Councilman Al Austin, is entering his senior year and has emerged as a major recruit this spring and summer. Austin helped USA Football to a gold medal earlier during the break and committed to Oregon State a few days ago while on an unofficial visit.
“The timing just felt right,” Austin told 247’s Greg Biggins. “I wanted to get my decision out of the way early so I could focus on my senior season. I wanted to focus on my Poly squad and not have to deal with the stress of recruiting during the season.”
Austin said he felt at home on the campus, where the 6-1 corner will fit into the defensive backfield. Oregon State runs a lot of press coverage and like Austin’s length in that scheme. He had scholarship offers from Hawaii, San Jose State, and New Mexico, among others.
