St. Anthony will once again honor some of the finest athletes from the school’s 98-year history, as the school recently announced its 2018 Hall of Fame class. The athletes and coaches will be inducted in a ceremony at The Reef Restaurant in Long Beach on November 17.
“The 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame provides a unique opportunity for the Saints community to celebrate 98 years of educational excellence as we honor these legendary Saints and our rich athletic tradition,” said high school President Gina Rushing Maguire in a statement.
The Saints will induct: David Adlesh (baseball), Cormac Carney (football), LaTima Jones (track & field), Walter “Spud” O’Neil (baseball), Walter Osgood (baseball), Polly Pope (volleyball) Manu Tuiasosopo (football).
For local sports fans the highlights are sure to be Tuiasosopo and O’Neil. The former was an All-American at UCLA after graduating from St. Anthony in 1975, and went on to be a first-round draft pick and a Super Bowl champion with the 49ers during his nine-year NFL career.
O’Neil has made a name for himself as one of the most successful baseball coaches in California history, with over 800 wins on the diamond including multiple CIF championships at Lakewood.
For more information or to purchase tickets to the event, the school requests that fans contact Mandy Lopez, Alumni Affairs and Communications, at (562) 435-4496, Ext. 1217. Proceeds from the Nov. 17 banquet will go towards the renovation of the school’s athletic facilities.
