Long Beach Poly opens its home schedule and gets its first real test of the season as the Jackrabbits host Narbonne at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.
“They have a very strong offensive line led by some big recruits and talented skill players, it will be a tougher matchup for our defense than Dorsey was last week,” said Poly coach Stephen Barbee.
Scoreboard watchers might expect a Poly win given that the Jackrabbits dominated Dorsey last week and Narbonne was beaten 47-7 by St. Louis in Hawaii. But Narbonne isn’t Dorsey and Poly isn’t St. Louis.
“They’re incredibly talented, they played the best team in Hawaii last week,” said Barbee.
The Gauchos are ranked ahead of the Jackrabbits in the CIF State and Maxpreps rankings.
This intersectional matchup has given the Jackrabbits some of its best nonleague wins over the last four years. Poly won last year, and in 2015, on late fourth quarter touchdowns. The Jackrabbits suffered their worst loss since 1916, 56-0, at Narbonne in 2012. Poly went on to win the CIF-SS Pac-5 championship later that year.
The game will also be a homecoming for Narbonne slot receiver Eren East, who transferred from Poly over the summer, as well as QB Jake Garcia, who is sitting out this game awaiting his eligibility in a few weeks.
There will be a moment of silence for fallen Long Beach fire captain David Rosa before the game.
