Football: Compton Tops Santa Monica, Improves To 2-0

It’s been eight years since the Compton football team started 2-0, but that’s the position the Tarbabes find themselves in after an impressive 13-6 win over Santa Monica.

“It’s been a long time, man,” said Compton coach Calvin Bryant. “We’re feeling good, it’s great to be 2-0. Now we just want to focus on some things we’re not as good at.”

The Tarbabes had a pair of touchdowns called back but got 122 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown from Niles Hibbert, who also contributed on defense with a pass deflection and a fumble recovery. Terrence Pratt had 55 yards rushing and Jesse Brew threw for the other touchdown. The only score Compton gave up was on a fumble with 20 seconds left in the half that Santa Monica scooped and scored.

The win sets up a huge showdown for the Tarbabes with their historic city rivals, Dominguez. First, though, Compton has a bye week, which Bryant says is needed.

“We’ve got a few guys banged up so we can use the week off,” he said. “Every week gets tougher, we just want to continue to focus on doing things better and better.”
