Lakewood is playing its first game in California at 7 tonight when the Lancers host Mayfair in the Milk Bucket rivalry game. Last week, Lakewood lost in Florida to Windermere Prep 28-2.
“We had a terrific time in Florida and found out that football is hard, especially in the humidity while going both ways,” Lakewood coach Mike Christensen said. “I loved our energy. We payed the whole game hard, and the players learned a lot.”
Mayfair (2-0) is ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division 6 after high-scoring wins over Wilson and California. WATCH VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS from the season opening victory over the Bruins.
This is the second consecutive Milk Bucket game after a short hiatus. When Lakewood was battling Poly for the top spot in the Moore League, it was dominating Mayfair while winning eight straight Milk Bucket meetings. After two years without playing each other, Mayfair beat Lakewood 21-18 last season for the first time since 2006.
“This is the biggest win in 30 years,” Mayfair coach Derek Bedell told the team after that game.
Lakewood running back Sebastian Kronberger, who led the Lancers last year with 1,316 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns, ran for 189 yards last week in the loss.
