Congratulations to this week’s Athlete of the Week winners! Thanks to Naples Rib Company for sponsoring these weekly honors.
HIGH SCHOOL
Deshon Harris, Jordan Football
Jordan is on its first win streak since the 2015 season and is 2-1 for the first time since 2011, John Ross’ junior season as a Panther. That’s thanks in part to an eye-popping performance by running back Deshon Harris against Lynwood. Harris had 12 carries for 66 yards and three touchdowns, as well as a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Logan Ziegenhagen, Wilson Football
Wilson has been known for its linebacking corps under Mark Ziegenhagen, both during his tenure as head coach and when he was the defensive coordinator. The Bruins have another talented linebacker this year in Logan Ziegenhagen, Mark’s son. Logan had seven tackles in a 10-7 win over Huntington Beach, including two for a loss. Most notably, he had a goal-line fourth-down stop at the end of the game to give the Bruins their first win.
Liz Schuster, Long Beach Poly Volleyball
Long Beach Poly senior setter Liz Schuster is committed to Cal State Fullerton, and leading the Jackrabbits this season with a great all-around game. Schuster helped Poly to a perfect 2-0 start last week in league play against Millikan and Wilson, and to the silver bracket title at the Dave Mohs Tournament in Huntington Beach. Against Wilson, she had 36 assists, 10 digs, and a pair of aces. Against Millikan she also had 36 assists and 10 digs, along with three kills.
COLLEGE
Drake Peabody, Long Beach City Football
Given that he hadn’t started a football game in nearly two years, Vikings quarterback Drake Peabody could have been forgiven for needing some time to shake the rust off in LBCC’s opener against Grossmont on Saturday. But Peabody was a star, going 22-34 for 285 yards and four touchdowns, while running in a fifth score. LBCC went on to build a 38-7 lead early in the fourth quarter behind Peabody’s performance, allowing them to sub players in to finish the game.
