On Friday afternoon, the Avalon Lancers used a Beto Martinez rushing touchdown to take down Rolling Hills Prep 32-26 in overtime. The victory on the road avenged last year’s lopsided league loss for Avalon, which was the first time Rolling Hills Prep had beaten the Lancers since 2011.
Avalon coach Michael Forcella said his quarterback Jose Gomez and running back Jason Campos had standout games. He added that on defense, Cristo Hernandez picked up multiple sacks while Calvin Rios and Diego Rios controlled the line of scrimmage.
The game was tied 18-18 at halftime, and the Avalon defense came up with a huge stop in the overtime period to set up Martinez’s winning score.
Avalon (2-0, 1-0 Express 8-Man League) travels to Huntington Beach on Saturday for a league game against Brethren Christian.
