Congrats to our winners of this week’s Athletes of the Week awards and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship.
Elijah Juarez, Long Beach Poly Football
The senior Jackrabbit was the star of the show again on Friday at running back, with 17 carries for 256 yards rushing and three total touchdowns. It was Juarez’s first game starting at running back after he filled in due to injuries midway through the Millikan game. Juarez credit a Poly offensive line that helped the team pile up 326 total yards through three quarters.
Qu’Juan Campbell, Millikan Football
Millikan got a big rivalry win over Lakewood, in large part due to the heroics of running back Qu’Juan Campbell, who had 10 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-24 Millikan win. The Rams trailed coming out of the locker room for the third quarter but Campbell’s first two carries of the second half were touchdown runs of 54 and 73 yards, putting Millikan back in the lead.
Rylie McGinest, Long Beach Poly Volleyball
Long Beach Poly pulled off a thrilling five-set win over St. Joseph in the Steve Lewis Volleyfest on Saturday, and a freshman was a big part of the reason why. Rylie McGinest (the daughter of Jackrabbit legend Willie) has been a force in the middle this year, and she had 15 kills with no hitting errors against the Jesters, as well as seven blocks. McGinest had five kills and two blocks in the fifth set.
Moni Vivao, Lakewood Volleyball
Lakewood setter Romoni “Moni” Vivao is committed to UC Santa Barbara and the senior already looks like she’s ready to compete at the NCAA level. She had a monster match for the Lancers on Saturday evening at the Steve Lewis Volleyfest, leading Lakewood to a sweep of VIlla Park with 29 assists, nine kills, and eight digs. Had the match gone four sets Vivao would have had a good shot at the Moore League’s first triple double.
