Lakewood and Compton are playing for their playoff lives tonight at Compton, and they’ll both be relying on their rushing attack. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
With identical Moore League records, Lakewood (2-6, 1-2) and Compton (5-2, 1-2) can still sneak into the CIF-SS postseason if they even their league record tonight.
“We just need a few breaks to get things going,” Lakewood coach Mike Christensen said. “We just haven’t been fortunate enough or good enough yet.”
Lakewood has lost to its last two league games by a combined six points, and Compton is coming off of a pair of tough losses after starting the season on a five-game winning streak.
This game features two of the most potent rushing attacks in the local area. Compton is averaging 369 yards rushing per game with 25 touchdowns, and Lakewood has one of the best running backs around in senior Sebastian Kronberger. He was injured for a month, but returned and rushed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns last week against Wilson. Compton senior Niles Hibbert has rushed for 753 yards and eight touchdowns in six games.
“Coach Bryant does a great job (at Compton) and is one of the good guys in our profession,” Christensen said. “They are good at what they do and will be a challenge to control. I love the way their kids play and they are always a challenge at home.”
