PREVIEW: Millikan vs. Cabrillo, Football

The Moore League football clash at Millikan tonight between the Rams and visiting Cabrillo Jaguars is important to both teams for very different reasons. Millikan (4-2, 2-1) needs a win to keep pace and set up a second-place showdown with Wilson next week, while Cabrillo (2-5, 1-2) needs a win to stay alive in the playoff race.

“Our team is taking it one game at a time,” Millikan coach Justin Utupo said. “Our focus is defending home field Friday night and continuing to improve in our effort, communication and team chemistry.”

Millikan has won its last two games by a combined seven points by getting big plays down the stretch from playmakers who are back from injury. Utupo said his team is healthy again after a bye week.

“Our players understand they need to continue to do more when they are home by taking care of their bodies, hydrating and stretching on their own,” Utupo said. “Our athletic training staff has done a great job with treatment and rehab.”

Cabrillo is coming off of its dramatic win over Jordan last week, and the Jaguars haven’t beaten Millikan since 2015.

“They’re a tough team and are one big play on offense, and one turnover on defense, away from gaining momentum and winning games they have dropped this season,” Utupo said of Cabrillo.
