There’s not much at stake tonight when Millikan (6-2, 4-1) visits Jordan (3-6, 0-5) for the Panthers’ Homecoming game.
The Rams have already clinched the second-place seed out of the Moore League; even if they lose, they’d be 4-2 in league, with only Wilson capable of tying them, and the Rams own the tiebreaker over the Bruins thanks to last week’s thriller.
At the same time, a lot rides on the game. Millikan is trying to get their offense and defense both playing at their peak prior to the start of the playoffs. Head coach Justin Utupo has acknowledged that for most of the season, only one unit has been playing their best football.
Millikan is also currently No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section’s Division 7 rankings. A big win over Jordan could help persuade the seeding committee to bump them up to No. 4–that’s a big deal because only the top four teams are truly seeded in the CIF-SS playoffs. To simplify that: a top four ranking would mean the Rams wouldn’t have to play any of the other top four teams until the semifinals.
For Jordan, a win would mean the chance to build into next year with momentum, and to celebrate Homecoming with a first league victory over a ranked team.
