The Long Beach State men’s water polo team defended its home pool this weekend and won three matches to take the Golden Coast Conference tournament championship. LBSU beat top-seeded Pacific 10-6 on Sunday in the championship match.
Junior Austin Stewart scored a game-high four goals for the Beach. Senior Troy Kaltenbach added two goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Marwan Darwish finished with nine saves.
The tournament title automatically qualifies LBSU for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991. The Beach will host the opening round on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center against No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer (24-8).
