St. Anthony boys’ basketball spoiled the season opener at Wilson High on Tuesday night as the Saints handed the Bruins an 88-57 loss.
St. Anthony senior Frank Staine had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Miles Dickerson finished with 18 points after making four 3-pointers. The Saints (1-3) made seven of their 20 shots from behind the arc, and led by more than 30 points in the third quarter.
Wilson junior Johnathan Chan finished with a team-high 19 points. The Bruins (0-1) were hampered by early turnovers, and only scored eight points in the first quarter.
“Their experience and length gave us problems,” Wilson coach James Boykin said. “Our inexperience showed with those early careless mistakes.”
St. Anthony used open layups off of turnovers to go on a 10-0 run in the first quarter. The Saints opened up a big lead in the second quarter, and used their entire bench. Ten of the 11 players on the St. Anthony roster scored points.
This is just another local matchup for St. Anthony. The Satins play Los Alamitos, St. John Bosco, Millikan and Carson in the next five games.
“I love the local matchups because they’re good for the city,” St. Anthony coach Allen Caveness said. “There is a lot of basketball pride and energy in Long Beach, and we want to play everyone so we can see what it takes to be the best. We want to play Poly.”
