Frankenfeld (fourth from the left) and the other top 8 finishers at the Foot Locker West Regional.
A long, grueling season for Long Beach Poly senior cross country runner Will Frankenfeld will end exactly where Frankenfeld wanted it to: in San Diego at the 40th annual Foot Locker Nationals, where he’ll be joined by 39 of the top high school cross country runners from around the nation.
Frankenfeld became the first Long Beach runner to qualify for the prestigious race by finishing second at the Foot Locker West Regional last weekend at Mt. SAC. The top 10 runners from that regional race advanced to the nationals, but Frankenfeld decided to erase all suspense with a second-place finish, completing the 5K course in 15:34, one second off the win. Frankenfeld was also the top California runner in the race, leading the state to a team title against the other Western States.
Frankenfeld added to an already-stuffed senior season trophy case with a team championship medal and a silver as an individual.
The Foot Locker Nationals will take place this Saturday in San Diego.
