Millikan Rams Girls’ Basketball Preview

It’s a new season for the Rams, who are led by longtime coach Lorene Morgan, the school’s all-time basketball wins leader. Millikan is in Division 2, where they’re ranked No. 12. The season isn’t the only ‘new’ thing at Millikan, where the Rams also feature perhaps the youngest roster Morgan has ever had.

“It’s a different year for us,” said Morgan. “When I say everyone’s getting in, I mean everyone’s getting in–we have games already where every player has been on the floor. I think that bodes well for the future, but it’s whether that future comes in two months or another year.”

Millikan’s 13-player roster features just two seniors and only three juniors, giving the Rams a strong young foundation to build on.

Emily Newkirk is one of the two seniors, and will likely lead the Rams statistically this year. She averaged 10.3 points per game and 11 rebounds per game in Millikan’s first week.

“She does a lot of things, she can bang a little bit inside but she’s got three-point range,” said Morgan.

Of the youngsters to watch, freshman point guard Amy Walker looks like a rising star, as does Allison Crawford, a six-foot freshman.

“They’re going to be really good, we just have to get them out there and throw them into the fire a little bit,” said Morgan.

The Rams are off to a 3-1 start so far this season with a loss in the San Marcos Excalibur Classic championship game.
