Long Beach Sports Calendar Dec. 20-23

THURSDAY

High School Boys’ Basketball, 6:30 p.m.

Defending Moore League champion Long Beach Poly will be on the road tonight in a rescheduled game at Compton. This has been the marquee matchup in the league for the last few years, and Compton coach Tony Thomas said he has one of his most naturally talented teams in years.

Long Beach State Men’s Basketball vs. Pepperdine, 7 p.m.

The Beach is back at Walter Pyramid for a pair of home games this week. Pepperdine (6-5) hasn’t won a road game this seasons, and has losses to Southern Utah, Cal State Northridge and UC Riverside. LBSU beat Southern Utah on Dec. 5 thanks to huge performances from seniors Deishuan Booker and Temidayo Yussuf. St. Anthony alum Eric Cooper Jr. is averaging 12.1 points per game for Pepperdine. The Waves have won 17 of the last 27 meetings with LBSU.

High School Girls’ Soccer, 3 p.m.

Defending Moore League champion Wilson is at Jordan today while Millikan hosts Compton and Poly hosts Cabrillo.

Girls’ Soccer Roundup: Poly Comes Back To Beat Wilson

High School Wrestling, 5 p.m.

The Moore League schedule continues this evening as Poly visits Wilson for one of the last key league meets just three weeks into the season. Elsewhere, Millikan takes on Cabrillo, Lakewood hosts the team from Compton/Jordan. READ MORE

FRIDAY

Long Beach City College Men’s Basketball vs. Pierce, 6 p.m.

The No. 8 Vikings (10-2) are at home again tonight to take on Pierce. Last Friday, LBCC beat visiting Mt. San Antonio College 74-58 in the Hall of Champions Gym. With the win, the Vikings advance to 10-2 overall. LBCC lead by as many as 30 points in the second half, and sophomore guard Jamiu Akinbile led the Vikings with 13 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Freshman guard Aaron Jelks had 12 points and two assists. Mt. SAC took a 7-0 lead before Akinbile found sophomore guard Jordan Heard hit a 3-pointer. LBCC would tie the game 12-12 and then never trailed after finishing the half on a 36-11 run.

SATURDAY

Long Beach State Men’s Basketball vs. Colorado State, 2 p.m.

The Rams (5-6) are visiting Long Beach for only their second road game of the season. Five different Colorado State players are averaging double digit scoring, and J.D. Paige leads the team with 16.3 points per game. The all-time series between LBSU and Colorado State is tied 3-3 after the 49ers lost on a buzzer beater last year.

SUNDAY

Long Beach State Women’s Basketball at Utah State, 2 p.m.

The 49ers are back on the road today for their final nonconference game away from Walter Pyramid. Utah State (5-5) is on a three-game winning streak and has a quality victory over Washington State. Shannon Dufficy leads the Aggies with 14.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
