Girls’ Soccer: Millikan, Wilson Play Scoreless Draw

Millikan kept its spot atop the Moore League girls’ soccer standings after playing a scoreless draw at Wilson on Saturday. It is the second time these teams have played to a tie in their last three meetings.

“We know every time we play Millikan it’s going to be a lot of emotion and heart,” Wilson coach Dalton Kaufman said. “It’s a really respectable rivalry. They’re intense games. We knew we had to win to stay in the race.”

Wilson (7-4-5, 4-1-2) outshot Millikan 6-1 in the first half, and 9-3 for the game, but there were only two saves apiece needed from Rams goalkeeper Isabella Meyer and Bruins goalkeeper Daniella Uchio for the shutouts. Millikan has only allowed one league goal this season.

“I knew they were going to come out and really want it,” Millikan coach Tino Nunez said. “In the first half we were under pressure. They did a good job of making it hard for us to play. But we reacted a lot better in the second half to get something going.”

Millikan (8-6-5, 5-0-1) got its best chances to score late in the second half on a string of set pieces. Wilson committed 19 fouls to just five committed by the Rams.

This was a rescheduled game, and these two teams are scheduled to play again on Tuesday. Both coaches said he wouldn’t change much about his game plan in the rematch.

“In fact, we’re going to go at them twice as hard,” Kaufman said.
