Friday featured two dominant wins from the top two teams in the Moore League boys’ soccer standings.
Wilson 2, Jordan 0
A pair of first-half assists provided by Javi Cervantes proved to be the difference as the Bruins handed the Panthers their first league defeat, and stayed undefeated atop the standings. The game was scheduled to be at Jordan High, but the field was unplayable, so Wilson High hosted a Panthers home game. Jordan came back to earn a 2-2 draw at Wilson last month.
“We felt like this was our home game and we couldn’t do the same thing again,” Cervantes said.
Wilson broke the game open with sustained pressure that was sparked by a 14th minute shot on goal from Gustavo Cervantes. In the 33rd minute, G. Cervantes scored on a quick cross from J. Cervantes. The second goal came two minutes later on a J. Cervantes set piece from the same right side that defender Daniel Frazier headed home.
“Honestly, I just try to float it in and expect my players to get the 50/50 ball,” Cervantes said of his crosses. “I try to hit it a little softer, with not too much pace on the ball.”
Wilson goalkeeper Norman Chang only needed to make a pair of saves for the shutout. Cesar Vazquez, Andres Mota, Dylan Byrne and Diego Llergo all played particularly well defensively in front of Chang.
“They play a full 80 minute game, an they’ve got a motor that never stops,” Wilson assistant coach Doug Fatone said of Jordan. “I think the difference was our boys were a lot more composed today. We did a better job of possessing and taking care of the ball and taking opportunities away.”
Jordan has come back from multiple goal deficits four times this season. Despite outshooting Wilson 5-3 and earning five corner kicks in the second half, the Panthers were shutout for only the third time this season. Wilson outshot Jordan 12-7 in a game that included 36 fouls and four yellow cards.
Cabrillo 3, Compton 0
Eduardo Mosqueda, Alexis Torres and Brayan Valenzuela scored the goals for the Jaguars while goalkeeper Yancy Monterola and his defense delivered their 12th shutout performance in the last 15 games. Cabrillo has only given up two goals in league play.
Millikan 4, Lakewood 1
Senior Cameron Bedal scored two goals for the Rams, while Justin Huddleston and Gibson Channel each scored once.
