Long Beach Sports Calendar Jan. 24-26

Find out where your favorite teams are playing this weekend.

THURSDAY

High School Girls’ Soccer, 3 p.m.

The oldest rivalry in Long Beach will decide who takes over second place in the Moore League today as Wilson visits Poly. When the Jackrabbits visited the Bruins last month they scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come back and win. In other action, first-place Millikan is hosting Lakewood while Compton travels to Jordan.

High School Girls’ Water Polo, 3 p.m.

Second place in Moore League girls’ water polo also will be decided today when Poly visits Millikan. Elsewhere, league-leading Wilson is visiting Jordan while Cabrillo hosts Lakewood. Next week features the final matches of the regular season.

Long Beach State Women’s Basketball vs. UC Riverside, 7 p.m.

The Beach is tied for third place in the Big West, and in a strange scheduling twist, this is the second time in two weeks that LBSU will take on UC Riverside. The Beach beat the Highlanders (7-11, 1-3) 63-45 on Jan. 10 when Cydnee Kinslow (14 points), Justina King (13), Naomi Hunt (11) and Shanaijah Davison (11) all scored in double figures for LBSU.

FRIDAY

High School Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball, 5/6:30 p.m.

After tonight there will only be one week left in the regular season before the CIF Southern Section playoffs start on Feb. 5. and league-leading Poly can clinch at least a share of the Moore League title with a win at Wilson. In other action, Millikan is hosting Lakewood while Compton travels to Jordan.

Long Beach State Men’s Volleyball vs. USC, 7 p.m.

The 2018 NCAA National Championship banner will be raised into the Walter Pyramid rafters tonight as LBSU hosts USC. The Trojans (4-2) are led at the net by Long Beach Poly High alum Sam Lewis, but he’s only played six sets this season. The middle blocker was an MPSF All-Freshman selection last year and captain of the 2018 USA Volleyball Junior National Team.

Long Beach State Track & Field at Air Force Indoor Invitational

LBSU will be at the Air Force Academy in Colorado this weekend with six other teams from Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Northern Colorado, Wichita State and Wyoming in the first meet of the year.

SATURDAY

Long Beach State Women’s Basketball vs. Cal State Northridge, 4 p.m.

The Beach finishes its homestand this week against second-place CSUN. The Matadors (9-9, 3-1) are on a season-long two-game winning streak after beating Hawaii and UC Riverside. CSUN senior Channon Fluker leads the Big West with 10.9 rebounds, and is third in the conference with 14.9 points. St. Anthony High alum Juliana Louis and Poly alum Eliza Matthews are averaging a combined 10 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Matadors.

Long Beach State Men’s Basketball vs. UC Santa Barbara, 7 p.m.

Big West leading UCSB (14-3, 3-0) is coming to Long Beach on a six-game winning streak as LBSU hosts its third consecutive Saturday night game at Walter Pyramid. UCSB guard Ar’mond Davis leads the Gauchos with 14.4 points. LBSU leads the all-time series 67-59 after winning five of the last six meetings.

Long Beach State Women’s Water Polo at Cal Tournament

The Beach is starting its season in Berkeley this weekend with games against No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 California, No. 20 San Jose State and Fresno State at Cal on Saturday and Sunday.

Long Beach State Women’s Tennis vs. UC Riverside, 12 p.m.

LBSU is starting its Big West schedule at Rhodes Tennis Center against UC Riverside. The Beach has never lost to the Highlanders in 22 conference meetings.
