Wilson Boys’ Soccer Beats Cabrillo, Wins Moore League

A scoreless Moore League boys’ soccer clash turned into a coronation on Monday at Wilson where the Bruins used an 80th minute goal from senior Carlos Mota to edge Carbillo 1-0. The victory give Wilson its first league title in 12 years.

“The boys bought in,” Wilson second-year coach C.J. Brewer said. “You can’t just win league. There’s things you have to do in the year of development to get to that point. The goal isn’t to win league, the goal is to achieve those cultural things. This team practiced as much as CIF would allow. They’ve put in a lot of work and that’s why they’re so excited about it.”

Wilson (13-6-4, 8-0-3) was outshot 9-7 by Cabrillo, and the Jaguars had better scoring chances in the second half, but the Bruins scored the only goal of the game in the final minute when Javi Cervantes put a free kick from midfield into the 18-yard penalty box. Freshman Anthony Garcia was there to flick a header towards the back post, and Mota lunged to poke home the game-winner. It was just the third shot on goal for the Bruins, and the fourth league goal allowed by Cabrillo.

“We’ve been practicing the re-defelction so I was just hoping one of my teammates could put it there,” Mota said. “I read it, went in and Anthony had it there for me. We had the height on them so we knew it would only take one.”

It is Wilson’s first win over Cabrillo in the last six meetings. The Jaguars (17-2-4, 7-2-2) are currently ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 2.
