Long Beach City College softball is off to a hot start after being ranked No. 14 in the California Community College Athletic Association preseason poll. The Vikings (9-0) have outscored its opponents 82-26 while racking up 29 extra base hits in less than 250 at bats, but coach Megan Martinez is not surprised.
“We really don’t look at or talk about the stats or our record,” Martinez said. “They know that May is when they want to get to, and they know that’s when we need to be rolling.”
The CCCAA State Championships at Bakersfield College are scheduled for the weekend of May 17.
The Moore League has been a great talent pool for Martinez to pull from. Wilson alum and freshman pitcher Joey Vega has stepped right into a role as ace with a 1.42 ERA over her first 24.2 innings pitched.
She also has 21 strikeouts and and a 5-0 record. Jordan alum Ileana Rivera leads the Vikings with 14 hits to go with 13 RBIs and four doubles.
“This freshman class has some big powerful sticks, and the last-minute of Joey Vega has been the glue keeping us all together,” Martinez said. “She’s an incredible leader and blended right in with the squad.”
