There’s no doubt that there’s a ton of interest around Lakewood football and first-year head coach Scott Meyer this year.
A proud Lancers program has fallen on hard times the last several seasons, even missing the playoffs, which was once impossible to imagine at John Ford Stadium. Whether Meyer and an experienced group of assistants can bring back the Lancers tradition remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: there will be plenty of interesting games on the schedule for Meyer’s first year.
“I think we have a challenging schedule that will prepare us for the MOore League,” said Meyer.
Among those games is a return for Meyer to the program where he won multiple CIF-SS championships after leaving Long Beach Jordan: Corona del Mar.
“Corona del Mar might be the best team we play this year and will be a huge test as we wrap up the nonleague schedule,” said Meyer. “It will also be great to play in a rivalry game against Mayfair early in the season for the Milk Bucket.”
Meyer also pointed out that Lakewood’s opener, Aug. 23 against Camarillo, will pit the Lancers against a CIF-SS semifinalist from last year.
Here’s Lakewood’s full schedule:
8/23 vs. Camarillo
8/30 @ Mayfair
9/6 vs. Pomona
9/13 @ CDM
9/20 @ Cabrillo
9/27 vs. Jordan
10/4 vs. Millikan
10/11 BYE
10/18 @ Wilson
10/26 vs. Compton
11/1 @ Long Beach Poly
