With the departure of the well-liked Randy Totorp from the athletic director at LBCC, the school needed an experienced hand to come in and steady the ship while a search for the next AD gets going. The Vikings found their man as they’re pulling longtime Loyola Marymount athletic director Bill Husak out of retirement to serve as Interim Athletic Director on a one-year contract.
“We are so lucky to have someone like Bill, who has such a prolific career in college athletics, to join LBCCD,” said LBCCD Board of Trustees President Sunny Zia in a statement. “We are very excited to welcome him to the Viking Athletic Family.”
Husak was AD at LMU for 20 years, and was widely respected as he helped build LMU into a mid-major power in several sports. He’s well-known in town as a longtime Long Beach resident and a former senior associate AD at Long Beach State from 1993-98, before taking the job at LMU. Most notably, Husak was in charge of the fundraising campaign to built the Walter Pyramid.
LBCC is similarly under construction, with the new Kinesiology Labs and Aquatic Center (which will be the city’s largest aquatic venue) set to break ground soon.
“Viking Athletics has a history of great coaches and athletes,” said Husak in a statement. “As a resident of Long Beach, I am well aware of the success of LBCC’s athletic programs, so I look forward to bringing the spotlight to LBCC. It is such a great asset to the community.”
