The top-ranked Long Beach City College beach volleyball team clinched back-to-back South Coast Conference Champions with a 3-2 win over El Camino last week. The Vikings (12-6, 6-0) got phenomenal performances from the No. 1 duo of sophomores Sierra Davis and Brooklin Mize, and the No. 3 duo of sophomores Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez.
LBCC will compete in the Pairs Conference Tournament at El Camino on Friday.
Men’s Volleyball
LBCC won its fourth-consecutive Western State Southern Division Conference Championship last Friday with a 3-2 victory over Santa Barbara City College. The No. 3 Vikings (16-3, 11-1) share a piece of the title with El Camino College.
LBCC won the 2016 State Championship, and start the postseason with the CCCAA Quarterfinals on Friday. The Vikings will host No. 6 Santiago Canyon College at 6 p.m. in the Building Q Gym.
Baseball
The Vikings (21-12, 14-4) swept Cerritos last week to take over first place in the South Division of the South Coast Conference and secure a regional playoff berth. LBCC started the season by losing seven of their first nine games, but turned their season around with balanced offense and a deep pitching staff.
Sophomore second baseman Raul Gonzalez leads LBCC with 48 hits, and sophomore first baseman Mark Stanford has a team-high 31 RBIs with four home runs. Ace pitcher Garrett Rennie has won six of his 11 starts while striking out 71 in 73 innings. Lakewood High alum Sebastian Irwin has a 2.39 ERA in 52.2 innings. LBCC has outscored its opponents 225-146 this season.
