Long Beach City College baseball upset No. 5 Ventura College in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals last weekend. The Vikings advance to the CCCAA Super Regionals against No. 1 Orange Coast College this weekend.
Ace pitcher Garrett Rennie (8-2) helped LBCC win the first game of the seres at Ventura 3-1. He held the Pirates to five hits while striking out 13 in eight innings. Millikan alum Trevor Sutt picked up his ninth save of the season.
Ventura took game two 5-0 on Saturday, but the Vikings rallied in game three with the 12-3 victory. Sophomore first baseman Mark Stanford hit two home runs in the game, and sophomore third baseman Chris Rubottom hit another one. Sophomore designated hitter David Balboa and sophomore catcher Brett Wells each had an RBI triple.
No. 1 Orange Coast toppled No. 16 LA Mission College in a two-game sweep in the SoCal Regionals this past weekend. LBCC was swept in a three-game series at Orange Coast earlier this season.
The Super Regionals starts today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. and continues at 2 p.m. on Friday before a 1 p.m. game in necessary on Saturday.
Beach Volleyball
The Vikings will compete for the state championship on Friday at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, and then the pairs championship will be on Saturday and Sunday.
Swimming
Freshman Victoria Rowe and Michael Baker represented the Vikings at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships at De Anza College last weekend.
Rowe qualified in the 100 Butterfly and the 200 Butterfly. At the South Coast Conference (SCC) Finals two weeks ago, Rowe took second place in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.92). Then she placed first in the 200 Butterfly (2:21.36).
Baker qualified for the State Championship in the 200 Backstroke after taking third at the SCC Finals (1:59.03).
