Track: Millikan, Lakewood Sending Three To State After Monrroy Wins Gold

Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Track & Field Masters Meet was an incredible array of next-level talent, as always. Arguably the best performance of the day went to a newcomer, however, as Millikan’s Samarra Monrroy stole the show in the 400.

The freshman not only won Masters gold (the only 9th grader to do so), she also ran a new state-leading time in the quarter mile with a blazing 54.16. Monrroy has been having an excellent debut campaign, and has been proving that she’s here to stay.

Millikan is sending a second athlete to the CIF State meet after the Rams’ Alan Tabales cleared 6-4 in the high jump to take 11th and qualify for a trip to Clovis.

Another up and coming local kid is Cherish Washington of Lakewood. The sophomore didn’t have her best day in the shot put, and ended up finishing eighth with a 39-09.50, putting her just two spots out of qualifying for State. A few hours later, however, she was triumphant with a fifth-place heave of 138-06 in the discus, good enough to punch her ticket to Fresno.

Girls’ 400: Samarra Monrroy (Millikan, 1st, 54.16)

Girls’ Shot Put: Cherish Washington (Lakewood, 8th, 39-09.50), Destiny Okoh (Long Beach Poly, 12th, 36-04)

Girls’ Discus Throw: Cherish Washington (Lakewood, 5th, 138-06)

Boys’ High Jump: Alan Tabales (Millikan, 11th, 6-4)
