Next Tuesday, July 9, the Long Beach City Council will consider a proposal by councilwoman Jeannine Pearce to name the new Main Library downtown for Long Beach icon Billie Jean King.
According to a press release from Pearce, more than 1,000 community members have already signed on in support of the group, a diverse base of support that ranges from the city’s sports fans to the LGBTQ community. Pearce has agendized an item for the July 9 council meeting to formally name the library the “Billie Jean King Main Library” when it opens on September 21.
“She is more than an athlete,” said Pearce. “She is a woman with determination, a graduate of Poly High School, an author, and a woman that changed the world of sports for everyone. I can think of no better opportunity to support our community and our library system than this.”
We wrote a column suggesting this move a week ago, which you can read by clicking here. We will have more info as it becomes available.
