With teams moving divisions every year in the CIF Southern Section now as part of their playoff competitive equity model (using the teams’ previous two years of results to place them), we wanted to make sure everyone knew where they stand.
For football, Long Beach Poly will be in the newly-formed Division 1/2, a 24-team pool that will be split into two playoff brackets at the conclusion of the season. The top eight teams by ranking will go into Division 1, with the next 16 going into Division 2. While Poly is in the top division, other local teams are scattered throughout the rest of the levels. Millikan is in Division 6, Wilson is in Division 7, Lakewood and St. Anthony are in Division 9, Compton moved up to Division 11, and both Jordan and Cabrillo are in Division 12.
Girls’ Volleyball
Girls’ volleyball is one of the only remaining sports where the Moore League has two genuine Division 1 powers, with Long Beach Poly and Lakewood both easily making the top division again. The girls’ volleyball model for the postseason is the one that the CIF-SS adopted for football this year, so volleyball fans are familiar with the Division ½ postseason split. The Jackrabbits and Lancers are in the highest division again, as expected, with Millikan and Wilson in Division 3. Jordan, Cabrillo, and Compton are all in Division 4.
Boys’ Water Polo
The water polo playoffs also employ the Division ½ format, but there are no Long Beach teams in the highest division this year. Wilson will be the third-highest ranked team in Division 3 and will look to compete for a championship this year at that level. Millikan is one spot down in Division 4, Long Beach Poly is in Division 5, Cabrillo and Jordan are in Division 6, and Lakewood is in Division 7.
Girls’ Tennis
Poly and Wilson lead the way in Division 2, with Millikan and Lakewood in Division 4. Jordan, Cabrillo, and Compton are all in Division 5.
Cross Country
Cross country is one of the few sports in the CIF-SS to not use the competitive equity model, along with wrestling, swimming, and track and field. Cross country teams are still slotted into their Divisions based on enrollment size, which means most of the local schools remain at the top. Long Beach Poly, Wilson, Lakewood, and Millikan are all in Division 1. Below that, Jordan and Cabrillo are in Division 2, while Compton is in Division 3.
