Lakewood and Mayfair will play for the Milk Bucket trophy once again tonight at Ron Yary Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
When these schools were originally founded they were separated by a large farm so they play for the Milk Bucket to symbolize the crosstown rivalry.
“The kids are well aware of the history and it’s a great rivalry for city of Lakewood,” Mayfair coach Derek Bedell said.
These schools played some epic overtime games in the early 2000’s but Lakewood beat Mayfair for the bucket eight straight times from 2006-14. After some coaching changes and a three year hiatus, the Monsoons have won the last two Milk Bucket meetings. CLICK HERE to see coverage from last year’s game.
“We’ve got an empty space (in the football office) for that trophy that the guys know about,” Lakewood first-year coach Scott Meyer said.
Both teams are coming off confidence shaking losses in their home openers. Lakewood fell to Camarillo and Mayfair was edged by Wilson.
“It’s obviously a big rivalry game, but I don’t think you can make any one game any bigger than another,” Meyer said. “We play Pomona next week, so is that not important? No. We can’t go crazy and make it all about Mayfair because there’s a whole lot of football after that.”
