High School Football Preview: Wilson vs. Huntington Beach

The Wilson Bruins will be trying to continue their hot start at home again tonight against a familiar foe in Huntington Beach. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Oilers and Bruins have played each other for the last three years. Wilson won last year with a late defensive stand after Huntington Beach took the first two meetings. The Bruins had a game-tying extra point blocked two years ago in a narrow Oilers win.

“For whatever reason this game is one where we play each other well no matter what division we are or where we’re at,” Wilson coach Mark Ziegenhagen said. “We basically run the same stuff.”

Some of the Huntington Beach coaches were on the Wilson staff with Ziegenhagen when Mario Morales was coaching the Bruins. However, the Oilers offense hasn’t been anywhere near as successful as Wilson this season. Huntington Beach (0-2) has only scored eight points in its first two games.

Wilson is expecting the return of Huntington Beach star linebacker and tight end Christian Moore after he missed the first two games. Ziegenhagen said he gave the Bruins fits last year.

“They’re scrappy and they’ve got some athletes who can do some things,” Ziegenhagen said.

The Wilson offense is averaging 447.2 yards per game, and the defense is averaging five tackles for loss and three forced turnovers per game.

Wilson (2-0) is trying to start the season 3-0 after wins over Mayfair and San Jacinto. It would be the second 3-0 start of the Ziegenhagen era. The Bruins hadn’t started 3-0 since the 1960’s.
