Football: Compton Loses Hub City Classic To Dominguez

STORY & VIDEO BY MATT SIMON

Compton saw its quest for back-to-back Hub City Classic championships halted by crosstown rival Dominguez during a 49-30 loss on Friday at Compton High.

For the first time this season Compton (3-1) weren’t able to control the line of scrimmage as the Dons (3-1) rushed for more than 350 yards and five touchdowns.

“First we got to tip our hat to Dominguez,” Compton coach Calvin Bryant said. “They played a good game. We just got to make sure we’re better on both sides of the ball. We got started off really well offensively and we just need to work on containing the run.”

Senior Jai Smith continued his stellar play as he kicked things off with a 43-yard touchdown to give the Tarbabes an early 7-0 lead. Smith finished the game with 13 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Jaheim Hunt finished the game with 14 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown.

The Dons’ trio of John WIlliams, Jamarea Jones and Quinn Potts proved too much to handle as they combined for all five of Dominguez’s rushing touchdowns.

Compton and Dominguez went back-and-forth in the first half as each team took the lead until a botched snap led to a scoop-and-score and a 35-30 halftime lead for the Dons.

After that it was all Dominguez as the Dons scored twice and controlled the game after a 16-minute delay after the lights went out on the field.

Compton hosts Wilson next week to open Moore League play.
