After a couple of tough matches against Millikan and Wilson, Long Beach Poly’s girls’ volleyball team was hoping to have a nice routine sweep at the Steve Lewis Volleyfest on Saturday. Thanks to great effort around the floor and a lineup change, the Jackrabbits got what they were looking for in a 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 sweep of the Jesters.
“I thought our energy was a lot better, I was happy with that,” said Poly coach Leland McGrath.
McGrath made a change with Poly’s lineup as he put sophomore Adonia Faumuina as one of the setters in the team’s two-setter system, meaning she spends half of Poly’s rotations at outside hitter and half at setter. As a result, she had three kills and three blocks, but also 25 assists.
“I think the way teams have been playing us, we haven’t been using her very well in the back row as a hitter,” said McGrath.
Poly’s offense opened up nicely against the Jesters, with Ellie Requejo putting up 10 kills, Rylie McGinest posting three kills with four blocks, and Kamy Anaya posting seven kills.
Poly will travel to Vegas next weekend for the prestigious Durango Volleyball Tournament.
