Tonight’s Moore League opener between Wilson (4-0) and Compton (3-1) features two of the top teams in the league in what is sure to be a hotly-contested matchup at 7 p.m.
Wilson has yet to lose a game and is No. 1 in their CIF-SS Division, with championship expectations at the league and CIF-SS level. Compton meanwhile started out 3-0 but suffered a disappointing loss at Dominguez last week. Compton coach Calvin Bryant’s preseason motto was re-setting expectations for his team after a number of difficult league losses last year.
The Bruins are fortunate in that they have an experience defensive staff led by head coach Mark Ziegenhagen, who is a film-loving linebacker that has plenty of experiencing stopping Compton’s double-wing attack. Ziegenhagen has the right personnel this year as usual with Ethan Moxley, Brett Dowgiewicz, and his son, Logan–those linebackers are a great matchup against the double wing for the Bruins.
Compton’s added wrinkle this year is a spread look that could throw an extra wrinkle into the game.
Offensively, Wilson has put up 43 and 49 points the last two weeks, as quarterback Ryan Pettway continues to evolve into the Bruins’ offense and to make smart decisions.
Compton will have a bye next week while Wilson will visit Cabrillo.
