It’s been a historic start for the Wilson football team and the landmark wins continued to fall for the Bruins as they defeated Compton 55-14 Friday night to open Moore League play.
Ryan Pettway tossed three touchdowns as the Bruins (5-0, 1-0) rolled to their best start in more than 15 years.
“We’ve really been able to put things together after having being sloppy the last two years,” Pettway said. “I think we’ve realized what we can be and how great this team could be.”
Early on it looked like Compton (3-2, 0-1) could play spoiler as the Tarbabes went on a 9-play 80-yard drive that was capped by a Jaheim Hunt 32-yard touchdown to give the home team an early 6-0 lead.
But, Bruins answered right back on the next drive as Pettway connected with Michael Bruner for a 30-yard touchdown to tie the game at 6.
Wilson’s defense took over after holding the Tarbabes scoreless on their next seven drives.
During that time the Bruins scored on a flea flicker after Nicholas Timko connected with Clint Stephens for a 60-yard touchdown.
It wasn’t just the Bruins’ offense that was clicking, but the specials teams also blocked two punts and one was returned for a touchdown by Leroy Crook.
Late in the game there was an altercation during the game and three players were ejected.
“It’s a learning lesson,” Wilson coach Mike Ziegenhagen said. “This was an atmosphere you knew was going to be physical and we have to keep our heads.”
Wilson will be back in action against Cabrillo and Compton will have a bye.
