Here are some of the Long Beach sports events going on this weekend.
THURSDAY
High School Girls’ Volleyball, 4:30 p.m.
Long Beach Poly is enjoying the bye today while co-Moore League leaders Lakewood hosts Jordan, Wilson travels to Compton and Millikan visits Cabrillo.
High School Girls’ Golf, 2:30 p.m.
Today is the last day of the first round of Moore League action as Millikan hosts Cabrillo at El Dorado Golf Course, and Wilson travels to Skylinks Golf Course to face off against Lakewood.
High School Girls’ Tennis, 3 p.m.
Most of the top teams in the Moore League are at home today as Poly hosts CAMS, Wilson hosts Compton and Lakewood hosts Jordan. In other action, Millikan is at Cabrillo.
Long Beach State Women’s Soccer vs. No. 7 BYU, 7 p.m.
Coach Mauricio Ingrassia has built his soccer program by playing elite competition in home-and-home series. The Beach has already hosted No. 4 UCLA and No. 7 Penn State this season in games earned by traveling in years prior, and tonight they’ll host No. 7 BYU a year after beating the Cougars 3-1 in Provo, Utah. Ashley Gonzales, Taylor Bistline and Rola Badawiya all scored for LBSU. BYU leads the all-time series 7-4-0.
FRIDAY
High School Football, 7 p.m.
Long Beach Poly and Wilson are on a collision course for a historic meeting next week, but first the two best high school football teams in Long Beach have to go on the road to survive a trap game tonight. The Jackrabbits are at Millikan where the Rams are hungry after a big win over Jordan at home last week. The Bruins are visiting Cabrillo.
In other Moore League action, Lakewood is hosting Jordan in the Scott Meyer Bowl. The first-year Lancers coach helped the Panthers get to the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs 10 years ago, and Jordan started this year 3-0 for the first time since that season.
St. Anthony is also on the road at Agoura, and Avalon’s 8-man squad is at Lutheran in La Verne on Saturday at noon.
Long Beach State Men’s Water Polo vs. No. 7 UC Davis, 2:20 p.m.
The Beach is at USC this weekend for the MPSF Tournament. They take on the UC Davis Aggies this afternoon and then play three more games on Saturday and Sunday. LBSU beat UC Davis 13-12 in overtime at the Triton Invitational in the second game of the season. Senior Johnathan Wong scored a game-high four goals, and sophomore Matt Morris’s second goal of the night proved to be the game winner.
Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball vs. No. 13 Hawaii, 7 p.m.
LBSU is back at Walter Pyramid for the first time in eight matches, and it’s the last home game until the Beach hosts Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference action on Oct. 18. Hawaii leads the all-time series with LBSU 34-18-1 and coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer hasn’t beaten Hawaii in four matches.
Long Beach State Women’s Tennis
The Beach is in the desert this weekend for the annual UNLV Fall Tournament in Las Vegas. LBSU will play at least three matches over the three-day invitational. The Beach has a host of returning singles players who have high hopes for this season.
SATURDAY
Long Beach City College Football at No. 1 Riverside, 6 p.m.
The Vikings have a tough task in front of them with a trip to No. 1 Riverside today. LBCC hasn’t beaten Riverside since 2016, and the last two losses have been blowouts.
