It was a “Jordan” kind of evening for Long Beach Poly in their sold-out rivalry game against Wilson on Friday night. Quarterback Mekhi Jordan had a big performance with five touchdowns, one of which went to receiver Jordan Riles. It was also the night that the Jackrabbits unveiled their new Jordan Brand uniforms, in a “cool grey” color. In addition to the new uniforms, with the signature “Jumpman” logo, Poly’s players also got Jordan cleats.
“The kids were losing their minds when they got them out of the boxes,” said Poly coach Stephen Barbee. “I have no clue about that stuff but the kids are like, ‘Oh my God, the Jordan 1s, the Jordan 11s!’ They were pumped, they were screaming and jumping up and down. Christmas came early for our kids.”
Poly’s deal with Jordan Brand comes as part of their new agreement to become a Nike school this season, but it’s rarified air. According to Barbee, there’s only a handful of Jordan Brand high school football teams in America, with Bishop Gorman the only other program west of the Mississippi. At the collegiate level, Michigan is the only school to sign with Jordan Brand.
Barbee let his players vote on which game to use to unveil the new look, and he said they quickly chose Friday’s rivalry game with Wilson, which was played in front of a sold out crowd of more than 4,000. Poly fans will get a chance to see the look again when the team hosts their Senior Night game against Lakewood on November 1st, and potentially again if the team makes a playoff run.
“It’s the whole look good, play good thing,” said Barbee. “I just said, if you’re going to wear this stuff, you can’t lose in it.”
