St. Anthony needed a win on the road against St. Genevieve on Friday night to stay in the Del Rey League hunt, and the Saints used overtime heroics to get it 20-14.
It looked like St. Genevieve was running in to take lead on the first possession of overtime, but sophomore Kweku Claybrook caused a fumble at the goalie to keep the Valiants off the scoreboard. A few plays later after the Saints took over, sophomore Sone Aupiu scored to give his team victory that also clinches them a CIF-SS playoff spot.
“I’m proud of the way the players never gave up,” St. Anthony coach Mario Morales. “We were challenged tonight by a very good team, yet we found a way to win in overtime.”
St. Anthony (5-4, 3-0) will travel to St. Paul for a Del Rey League championship game next week.
Quarterback Lucas Lehmar put St. Anthony up 7-0 in the first quarter with a short run, but St. Genevieve tied it up before halftime. The Valiants then took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter, only to see Lehmar tie it up in the final minutes of regulation with his second touchdown run.
