Moore League boys’ soccer is the only sport in the city with three teams in CIF Southern Section Division 1 this year. Wilson, Cabrillo and Millikan are all in the top flight because of recent playoff success, which is something that eluded local teams for the majority of the last decade. The Rams are the only CIF-SS champions in that timeframe, while Cabrillo and Jordan have reached finals and lost.
Last year’s season was full of notable titles as Wilson won its first league title in 12 years, and Cabrillo went on to win the CIF State Division II championship. With the top half of the league likely headed into the toughest playoff bracket, its hard to imagine the league having much success in the postseason. However, soccer is one of the most unpredictable high school sports. If Long Beach soccer is successful it will be on the backs of players who have certainly waited for their time in the spotlight.
