In the second game of the Moore League Showcase, Long Beach Poly got out of the gates fast and never looked back defeating Cabrillo 16-5 Wednesday afternoon.
Madison Marshall and Julia Miller each scored two goals as the Jackrabbits strolled to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.
Marshall continued her strong play throughout the game on her way to five goals on the night.
“It feels really good to get this first league win,” Marshall said. “It definitely motivates us going into the next game to know what it feels like and want to get more.”
With the Jackrabbits rotating players in and out, Cabrillo’s defense slowed Poly’s attack allowing only one goal in the second quarter to 8-1.
The Jaguars’ Stephanie Villegas got Cabrillo on the board just before half to avoid the shutout.
Villegas scored two more goals in the third quarter to complete the hat trick, but the Jackrabbits had an answer for every goal as Poly took a 12-3 after third quarter.
“We have our starting group that did extremely well at the start of the game,” Poly coach Brandon D’Sa said. “We did get a lot of rotations in with those girls and we’re trying to use these games to prepare for the postseason. There’s always a lot of learning opportunities, but we keep playing hard and practice really hard, I think we’ll see that fruition at the end of the season.”
For Cabrillo coach Emily View, she was happy with how her team continued to battle after falling behind early on.
“You always want your kids to be able to bounce back,” View said. “We’re a small school and a small team, so we find ourselves at times, down and attitude and effort our things we’re really focusing on this year. So, to see them not get down on themselves and be able to refocus and re-energize and work as a team, it’s all I can ask for.”
