In light of the weeks-long suspension of high school sports in Long Beach due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we’re launching the inaugural The562.org Long Beach High School Smash Tournament this weekend.
The Smash Brothers tournament will be free of charge and open to any and all LBUSD high school students who want to participate. There will be an individual as well as a team champion, and we’re going to buy trophies for the winners after all this madness is over. Our hope is to provide a fun, competition-filled weekend for high school students to get excited about.
The tournament, organized by Millikan alum and Long Beach State esports athlete Drew Helms, will begin at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday, with the top games being streamed live on Twitch. We’ll have links to watch on our Twitter @562sports.
“Hopefully this will help people pass the time and maybe expose people to esports, which is the fastest growing sport in the country,” said Helms.
Helms founded Millikan’s esports team and competes for Long Beach State’s team. If interest is high enough in this first tournament, our hope is to expand it to other games in the coming weeks, until Long Beach students are able to get back to competing on the field and learning in the classroom.
The individual tournament will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. and the team tournament will begin Sunday at 10 a.m., and registration is currently open for both, free of charge.
