After weighing all of its options over the last two months, the Big West Conference Board of Directors announced today that its fall athletics schedule will be postponed through the end of the calendar year due to COVID-19 concerns. That means Long Beach State won’t start its women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, golf, tennis or cross country seasons next month.
“Our priority remains the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Long Beach State athletics director Andy Fee said. “Our campus administration and LBSU Athletics has been engaged throughout this process with input and consultation with our Big West Conference commissioner Dan Butterly.”
The Big West also said in its official release that, “Whether fall sport competition would be feasible in the spring will be determined by the Board of Directors at a later date and be based on conditions and circumstances that are in the best interests of the student-athletes.”
Any athletic related activity on campuses in the coming months will have to follow NCAA guidelines.
“It’s a tough day at the Beach and throughout the Big West,” LBSU women’s soccer coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. “I feel for all of the student-athletes and coaches who prepared for the 2020 season to start on time. We will process this announcement and respond with the quality that has always defined our program.”
The Big West also noted that winter sports such as men’s and women’s basketball are not impacted by this decision. Both are currently scheduled to begin their competition seasons on November 10.
